Structural change has been changing the cities of the Ruhr area for decades.

It's a slow process that's still going on.

The ones living here can experience this change very closely.

If you look at the Ruhr district from the outside, it is difficult to see this creeping disruption, as change is a slow process that only becomes visible in the comparison between the past and the present.

In fact, the structural change describes the transformation of the Ruhr area, once dominated by coal and steel, into the „Metropole Ruhr".

In the past the coal and steel industry were the region's leading economic sector.

With the change, many thousands of jobs have been lost, while more have been added outside the coal and steel industries.

With the founding of the first universities in Duisburg, Essen, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund, the centers of excellence shifted rapidly.

In the aftermath of its founding especially the Technical University of Dortmund attracted an entire new industry.

Today, the technology sector in Dortmund extends from the university far beyond the former Phoenix site.

Phoenix: Until 1998, this was a gigantic blast furnace plant in Dortmund's Hörde district. Today, numerous architectural relics are witness to these monumental industrial buildings.

It is precisely here, in the converted industrial buildings and on the wild sites of industrial history, that one of the largest, innovative regions in Germany offers fresh space to micro and nanotechnology companies.

Besides others Bartels Mikrotechnik settled here and today is part of the MST. factory - the first competence center for micro- and nanotechnology in Europe.
